Register Domain Names

A domain name is your online business address on the Internet. It is prefixed by www. and in the end, there are usually the initial letters of the country where the domain name is registered. In case of Australia, it is au and its domain space is regulated by auDA. The .au domain is further subdivided into several second level domains—2LDs.

You cannot register any domain name directly in the .au domain, or in other words, you cannot write your web address as “your address.com.au, but can register your domain name in the second level domain. For example, you can write your online address as “yourname.com.au” or “yourname.org.au”. Each domain name represents a specific type of enterprise. It is, therefore, up to you to select the domain category that suits you best considering the nature of your business, interest or social activity.

Some of the popular domain name categories are:

com.au
This is the most sought of domain as most of the people using the Internet are businessmen. “Com” indicates commercial companies that are usually registered with ACN through ASIC.

net.au
This domain is also opted for commercial networks and businesses registered with the state governments.

org.au
This domain is chosen by charities and non-profit organizations devoted to public service.

edu.au
As edu suggests this domain is reserved for educational institutions registered with the state or federal governments. This domain is under the management of the Australian Information and Communications Technology in Education Committee or AICTEC for the education sector in Australia.

id.au
Internet is not the exclusive reserve of the institutions or commercial organizations alone. Individuals too can register themselves under the id.au domain.

gov.au
This domain name is reserved for government bodies at the local, state and central level. It is managed by Australian Government Management Office—AGIMO.

asn.au
This name is usually opted by the incorporated associations, political parties, trade unions, sports and interest clubs, and so on.

Where to register the domain name?

There are many accredited registrars in the country where you can apply to register your domain name such as asn.au, com.au, id.au, net.au, and org.au.  Their addresses can be searched on the Internet. For more information, see auDA's au domains page at http://www.auda.org.au/domains/au-domains/.

It may be noted that registering under multiple domain names primarily for click- through advertising or capturing web traffic is illegal and may result in cancellation of the domain name.
